In 2005, Hannaford Brothers , an independently owned grocer in Maine, decided to act instead of react. Lead instead of be led. To accomplish this mission, they had to change and create growth beyond what their manufacturers and producers were providing. They had to make a real difference in the life of their shoppers. And, they did.

It’s a simple thing, the number 3. But it keeps Craig Kurz tossing and turning.

Kurz is CEO of The HoneyBaked Ham Company, an enterprise his grandfather, Harry Hoenselaar launched half a century ago when he invented the spiral slicer, a contraption that made it easy for post-War moms to serve ham. Harry could not have realized it at the time, but his machine would change the world.

Brunson Instruments faced an interesting problem. After focusing on implementing Lean in their manufacturing facility in Kansas City, Missouri, the company saw a significant decrease in lead times and improvement in on-time delivery. The company had cut costs and increased efficiency. These results were not the problem. The challenge was the greater capacity created by these efficiencies, and not enough increase in sales to fill it.

Questech believes its Eureka! idea will not only triple the size of their business, but change their industry as well. All it took was the Eureka!-inspired confidence to think big and commit to trying it out. The results speak for themselves.
