Innovation Engineering Black Belt®
Masters in the Application of 48  Innovation Engineering Skills

A report to the National Academy of Sciences found that certification leads to growth in confidence and capability resulting in IEBB’s leading 24X more projects with an overall valuation that was 28X versus those who had participated in introductory training.

To achieve certification, Innovation Engineering Black Belt candidates master the 48 skills that make up the Innovation Engineering Body of Knowledge and demonstrate mastery of the concepts through leadership of two innovation projects on behalf of the corporation.  Finally, the candidates document their transformation of to a systemic and scientific innovation mindset in a written reflection.

The training is at a Graduate School level content and pace.  The 48 Skills are the full body of knowledge taught as part of University Undergraduate Minor & Graduate School Certificate programs.  The learning method utilized is the patent pending Cycles to Mastery™ system (skills and method documented at www.InnovationEngineering.org).   It’s a sequence of Digital, Lab, Application, Experience and Reflection classes that academic research finds results in a 2.4 to 4X increase in the number of students achieving mastery.

The Innovation Engineering Black Belt Cycles to Mastery certification process is as follows:

I want to be a Black Belt!
•  96 DIGITAL CLASSES covering the 48 skills and sub-skills.  These video classes are accessible on the web, iPads and all smart phones.  The classes are short - 5 to 15 minutes - and highly focused.   The digital classes are also available after the course to provide helpful refreshers when needed.

•  The high intensity, hands on 5 day INNOVATION COLLEGE experience.  During the first three days of Innovation College students group and individual Lab Class assignments to making the learning real.  During the second two days the complete real world Application Classes where they define and discover real innovations for real companies.

• ONE ON ONE TUTORING On Lab & Application assignments.  A core principle of Innovation Engineering education is 100% success rate - true mastery - on all Lab and Application assignments.   To assist students in the journey to mastery of skills one on one phone and video conference  tutoring is provided by a Eureka! Ranch I.E. Master Black Belt - adapting the teaching to meet the unique learning style of the student.  All assignments must be completed to 100% success before moving to the Experience Class stage.  Note, students successfully complete 50 to 80% of their assignments during the Innovation College experience.

• LEADING an innovation project to build personal confidence. Candidates lead an innovation project for their corporation for a minimum of 8 weeks - through the Define and Discovery stages.  During the project they lead at least one Create and one Problem Solving session.   A Eureka! Ranch I.E. Black Belt provides on-call coaching support and participates in the weekly project meetings to build confidence and to ensure process success.

• COACHING an Innovation Project to solidify mastery.  As with training for Doctors or Veterinarians the learning process is: 1) WATCH ONE (during Innovation College), 2) DO ONE (leading as project leader) and 3) TEACH ONE (coaching a project) is used to solidify mastery.  During this stage the Black Belt candidate serves as either Process Coach or Management Coach (depending on their corporate role) for a minimum of 8 weeks - through the Define and Discovery stages.  During the project they lead at least one Create and one Problem Solving session. A Eureka! Ranch I.E. Black Belt provides shadow coaching - on call support and weekly check ins to coach the coach.

• REFLECTION on Transformation of Mindset.  The ultimate goal of IE Black Belt Certification is a transformation to a systemic and scientific innovation mindset.  This transformation or  “FLIP” as it’s called, occurs for Innovation Engineering Black Belt candidates at different times.  For most it occurs during the Innovation Engineering Application Classes.  For others, it occurs during the Leading or Coaching of projects.  The written Reflection assignment brings clarity and depth of understanding to the transformation that has occurred.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

As with other certifications, continuing education is required to retain your Black Belt certification.  Each year - through webinars, blogs, books and live and simulcast conferences - the Innovation Engineering Institute will update Black Belts on the latest developments in the field of Innovation Engineering.  As the Body of Knowledge continues to grow and improve, Black Belts will be taught the latest and greatest skills.

Continuing Education credits are rewarded through the University of Maine.
