Innovation Engineering Accelerator helps large companies, universities and government agencies find, filter and fast track FRESH IDEAS or ACCELERATE EXISTING IDEAS/STRATEGIES for profitable growth. Secondarily, it provides a hands-on, experience with the Innovation Engineering management mindset. Results are accelerated through a concentrated 100 day project that involves three steps: four week immersion into your challenge, four day Accelerator Session, and eight weeks of Acceleration coaching.
Step 1: Four Week Immersion into your Very Important Problem or Opportunity Area The process starts with a series of in-person conversations to define the project objective. We confront reality on what level of innovation is requested, strategic areas that are not requested and any tactical or executional constraints. Next, we engage your project work team in the new mindset through a half day training on the Innovation Engineering approach and how to prepare for the Accelerator session by doing stimulus mining, taking the no stress survey of their preferred innovation mindset and participating in a private blog before the project to get their thinking accelerated. Finally, we and your team “get close to the work.” This is customized for each project but often involves touring manufacturing facility, meeting with customers, key departments and senior leadership. Step 2: Four Day Accelerator Session designed to Accomplish Two Month’s Work With the immersion complete, a four day Innovation session is held. It involves fresh stimulus to spark ideas for accelerating success - customer insights and market mining plus thought-leading technology and future mining. Matched test and control studies using the Innovation Engineering method with Fortune 500 Companies found a 6X increase in high quality ideas generated. The increase in “big ideas” is good, but the most valuable part of the four days is the eight to twelve Fail FAST Fail CHEAP™ cycles of learning completed on over a dozen of the best ideas. The learning cycles focus the team on fully defining the ideas, identifying potential “Death Threats” to the concepts and running fast and cheap tests to resolve the issues or to make changes to the idea so to optimize odds of success. The learning cycles are guided by feedback from quantitative and qualitative concept research plus crunching the numbers on costs and sales forecasts using advanced forecasting models. Teams often say they accomplish two to four months of work on new ideas in just 4 days. The key secret to the acceleration is the transformation in how they work and collaborate. Step 3: Eight Weeks of Acceleration Coaching To GUARANTEE Innovation Success To ensure that the big ideas become REAL - and that the ideas don’t become victims of the corporate culture - your I.E. Black Belt provides weekly coaching starting with two ideas to ensure that the team doesn’t revert to the old way of thinking. The goal is to come to a smart “go” or “no go” decision before being recommended for development. Smart “no go” decisions are celebrated, and another idea from the invention session is then accelerated in its place.
